Most of us define ourselves and our understanding of the world through the idea of self. We believe without a self, reincarnation and karma wouldn't make sense. If there is no self, what does exist? For many, imagining life without a sense of self is difficult because it's how we perceive and relate to the world. We assume that our achievements and future possibilities rely on this self. But what if this view is mistaken? What if the self doesn't exist? What if the idea of self is the root of all unenlightened rebirths? Is it worthwhile then to seek the Truth that leads to enlightenment?
What if, instead of a self, we are merely the emotions that arise from the sensations and feelings accumulated through our interactions and experiences now and in our past lives? What if these emotions are stored like memories, only to be expressed in the present—unfiltered, uninhibited, and without deeper awareness—as we continue to accumulate sensations and feelings, living with scars but not with fear?
Consider this idea more clearly by imagining you were blind. Blindness naturally heightens other senses that you depend on to navigate your surroundings. The sensation of someone’s presence becomes undeniable without sight. But what happens when that person reaches out to touch your hand? The sensations of touch and warmth would confirm their presence, subduing the initial sense of proximity. However, as soon as you recognise their presence, emotions emerge—anxiety (Who is it?), fear (Friend or foe?), concern (Am I safe or in danger?)—flooding your conscious mind. You might smile, though unconvincingly, revealing your emotions. Now imagine the person squeezing your hand hard. You immediately feel pain, and anger arises. You scream and shake off their hand, displaying your emotions openly. The pain subsides, bringing relief, but fear resurfaces, and you turn to run, again driven by your emotion.
So, what is the self if we can be reduced to our sensations, feelings, and emotions? What if we are simply a collection of these experiences, accumulated throughout this life and past lives? And what if there is nothing more to grasp onto?
Now, consider this: if karma thrives on sensations, feelings, and emotions, what would happen if you neutralised them? Could that lead to enlightenment?
